Inpatient Services: Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan

Harvey Jones Adolescent Unit, Whitchurch Hospital.

The Unit is part of Cardiff and the Vale NHS Trust and serves the South Wales area.

The service aims to provide a therapeutic environment for inpatient assessment and treatment to young people experiencing severe psychiatric difficulties.

The Service
The service is provided for young people aged 11 to 17 years. Hospital inpatient provision is provided 7 days a week for up to 14 people. There are 2 day patient places.

Admissions are accepted from across the South Wales area. Most are planned in advance and may take 3 – 4 weeks, but urgent referrals take priority and a young person may be seen within 3 working days for initial assessment.

Liaison with the young person’s family and environment are key elements in the care and treatment package. Treatment includes medication, group work, education, family and individual therapy. Nurses, psychiatrists, teacher, social worker, art therapist, psychologist, occupational therapist, dietician and child psychotherapist all staff the unit.
Two of the 14 beds are used as a High Care Area for existing patients who need intensive care.

Referrals may be accepted for young people who are presenting with a range of clinical conditions including depression, anorexia nervosa, psychosis and obsessive compulsive disorder. Referrals may also be made where a detailed assessment is required for a young person on an inpatient basis.

Referrals  are usually made via a community based Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist.
